Why do medical interns get paid so little?

Why do medical interns get paid so little considering they have gone through 8 years of brutal studying and work. My research indicates they only get about 45k a year. A plummer makes more than that.

Why do medical interns get paid so little?
Because you are an intern...that's why.

For years, they didn't pay them anything, and then eventually started to keep them from starving to death while they finished school.
Reply:*learning experience is invaluable.*

My 26 year old son in law is a journeyman plumber and makes more per year than I ever have.
Reply:Because they are interns....not payed staff.
Reply:becuase once they become resident they make tons of cash
Reply:They're still in training. It takes a lot to be a doctor. Thank goodness too.
Reply:Oh shut up! Thats more than some ppl make in 2 yrs.
