It all depends on what its going to be used for. If you are going to run lots of programs you are going to need something with a fair amount of RAM which is simply a temporary storage for programs files. Most PCs will need now at least 512Mb to 1GB but if running vista the new operating system from windows you will need more than 1GB. If you are going to stare lots of files you will need a fairly decent hard drive probably 100GB+ plus if you are doing any downloading/lots of music etc but if you only need it for a few files 80GB will be good. Also speed of the computer is dependent on the CPU the main operating part of your PC. Most PCs ow will come with duel core and that's my best recommendation however anything ore you will need quad core but maybe a bit excessive unless you will be gaming. I think the first 2 of these will be pretty suited to your needs. Hope this helped

Reply:You need to pick the kind of laptop that is best for your personal needs. Depending on your budget and what you are going to use it for, there are different kind of laptops to suit your needs. The cheapest laptop is not always the best laptop. If you like to play games and have a larger budget, choose a laptop with more RAM (random acess memory) that has good graphics. If you are a little less picky about the computer, you can go for the lower priced models. Watch out for laptops that our used or refurbished, however. They can drain your money fast. Most of those laptops lose their battery charge fast and will break quickly.

Good luck!
Reply:You need to decide what you are going to use it for. I have no idea what medical research field needs in a laptop. For example, a graphics artist will need a high end laptop to render photos and movies and things like that. A accountant may just need a low end PC to do some TurboTax or something like that. A progamer will need a high end laptop to run the games. etc... If you are just going to be browsing the internet, writing papers, basic things... just go for the basic.

Basics...

Core 2 duo

2 GB RAM or more

80 GB or more Hard Drive space
Reply:Check out the computer and software review at ZDNet. It's the most informative site on the Net for evaluations. My preference is for Hewlett-Packard for computers.
Reply:Figure out what you need in a laptop. What features you want. Check out different brands and compare prices with features, durability, and reviews.
