Are there any organizations that donate money to purchase medical equipment for third world countries?

I'm looking to provide mobile clinics to groups that provide medical services in third world countries, especially in Africa. Most of these organizations do not have the resources to purchase these units, so I'm trying to find organizations that are willing to donate the money necessary to help. Foundations do not fund for just medical equipment, but want there to be some type of extensive research project attached to the equipment before they are willing to help.

Are there any organizations that donate money to purchase medical equipment for third world countries?
Email me a cover letter for this project and an Executive Summary (MAX 2 PAGES), with details of the first 120 day period budget and general overall budget spreadsheet and I will see what I can do. I think we can help you.

Will you use medical treatments derived from stem cell research?

If you believe it is murdering babies, will you use the treatments that are eventually derived from it for yourself or your loved ones, or will you refuse such treatments on moral grounds?

Will you use medical treatments derived from stem cell research?
Because research on embryonic stem cells requires the destruction of a living human being, it is against God’s will. No amount of promised “benefit” to society or to medical knowledge can justify the killing of a human for spare parts. The end does not justify the means. It is never ethical—in fact, it is morally reprehensible—to mark people for death in order to conduct utilitarian experiments on their body parts.

In contrast, research on adult stem cells does not require the loss of life. adult stem cells have versatility and a proven track record, and they lack the moral difficulties of embryonic stem cells. Therefore, we believe that research on adult stem cells is a legitimate field of study, well within the will of God.
Reply:Not all stem cell research involves "murdering babies" so my answer is YES. I am an insulin dependent diabetic and I suffer every day of my life with chronic pain from a damaged nerve in my back. I am only 33 years old and have a long life ahead of me. If stem cell research can make my life (and the lives of many millions of others as well) better, then I am all for it.
Reply:And since invitro fertilization destroys zygotes on a daily basis, they should protest the clinics and never EVER get artificial insemination.
Reply:It's not murdering anyone. I would gladly use it if it helps curing me, my beloved ones and anyone in need for treatment. A life that is already here should be taken care for far more than a one that hasn't completely formed.
Reply:I would absolutely use stem cell research for my medical condition if it gets worse (my spleen is killing off my platelets), but let me say that I would only use adult stem cell research because those are fully formed and functional without having to sift through everything first. Embryonic stem cells are open for research today by private companies, but no private companies are willing to spend that much money when adult stem cells are ready and better
Reply:Stem cell? Yes. Embryonic stem cell? No.

What type and brand of disinfectants do hospitals use to disinfect their medical equipments?

Hi, I need to know what are the disinfectants (brand and type) that hospitals and dental offices use to disinfect their medical equipment and surfaces and so on? Maybe there's a place that they all buy their products from? Any idea where I should start my research?

I appreciate any input. :)

What type and brand of disinfectants do hospitals use to disinfect their medical equipments?
it depends on what type of equipement you are referring to.

if it's surgical equipment (tools used in surgery, items used to insert chest tubes, put stitches in, etc) then it's put into an autoclave to be sterilzed with extremely HOT water.

if it's large equipment such as monitors, chairs, hospital beds, etc then it depends on what cleaning company the hospital has their contract with. for my hospital we use a special wipe called PDI Sani-cloth made from Microgen, Inc to wipe down our equipement.

housekeeping uses special chemicals to clean our rooms but i'm not exactly sure what those are.

hope this helps some
Reply:hi,they dont use a brand if u are asking about metals items used over and over. They are put in a autoclave, some are shaped like a microwave, except thtemperatures they reach can kill all viruses, bacteria, any other things u can think of.When the equipment goes through the entire cycle its finished, takes a few hours,of course as technology gets better, they do to.If u ask about a cleaner in general.mopping, wiping, restrooms, look up a chemical supply company, they have all the brands u can think of,not one facility uses the same, its according to the need, such as what floor, sick w/flu,babies,sur/med floor, all use different strenghths, and yes they are very good,I buy in gallons, its far cheaper, dont be surprised to find industrial lysol, clorox, and the room mister for smells among the masses.Read the label, make sure it is safe for everyday use,all are not ok to breathe constantly.

Argumentitive Research paper HELP..Gay partners medical rights?
I don't know a specific website but while searching domestic partnerships and common law marriage I came across a lot of this information. It talked a lot about relationship contracts and needing a will in order to be covered by an insurance policy. You might want to search the blue cross website because I know that they will cover a domestic couple (or a hetero or homosexual couple that live together but are not married). Hope this is of help.

How can someone get medical help in Lagos, Nigeria?

Someone I have been chatting with is asking for help to pay for the hospital bill for his son who was in an accident. I do not know him well enough to give money to and I know there are a lot of scammers there. Does Nigeria have any places where someone could get help with paying the medical bills there? So far in my research I have not found anything.

How can someone get medical help in Lagos, Nigeria?
Definitely it is a Nigerian scam,. Ignore it. Don't lose your money.

Take care.
Reply:Friend please understand this is said with the most serious conviction; ANYONE requesting ANYTHING from Lagos, Nigeria is 99.9 % a scam! That country is well known for online and telemarketing every sort of scam know to mankind! Please I beg you do not chat with or provide anyone from there any personal information! If you believe them sincere just say a prayer for them! Run Run Run away before you get taken!
Reply:There are (cheap) public hospitals in Nigeria. The quality of the service is appaling.

There is no public help for people who (wisely) opt for treatment at private hospitals. However, since it is mandatory, most employers have a health insurance sheme covering their permanent employees (and in some cases their spouses %26amp; children).

That being said, I'd be extremely wary sending money to anybody you only know via internet (if you thing otherwise, I'll be happy to send you my bank account details) and ESPECIALLY if the request comes from Nigeria; the birthplace of the 419 scams.
Reply:Find a witch doctor
Reply:Be wary! Be very wary! Sounds like a typical Nigerian scam. That place is in anarchy; and honor seems not to exist there, among most other things, many other things, lacking there because greed runs rampanat and nothing is left, apparently, for the poor decent people there. If your "friend" doesn't know of a source of help for "his son," how in the world would you know? Run!

How do I organize my avalanche of medical records and bills?

So since the summer I have been going thru "medical issues" and I am getting one or two letters a day from the insurance company or bills, or lab results, etc. Plus I have been doing my own research and collecting papers. Right now - all thrown into a big box. How can I get this in a sensible order? Do I put my bills in date order with the insurance claims attached, or seperate them. Seperate them by which Dr it is? I guess there are a few ways to go with all of this. What is the best way?

How do I organize my avalanche of medical records and bills?
Perhaps one of those accordian files from staples or office max stationery store can help to organize your medical records and bills. Those types of files usually have separated partitions alphabetically and/or by subject, but one can organize the file to suit themselves. I also like to use large paper clips as opposed to those small ones as it seems to look neater.

If you do see several different doctors, that may be a good idea to separate the records by that particular physician. And yes, putting the info in date order can really help one to keep organized (typically latest bill or document first).

This website has many different tips for organization: http://www.flylady.net

To try to find a professional organizer: http://www.napo.net and can look under the 'public' heading and such.
Reply:get a 3-ring binder, preferably a 6 inch one. get divider tabs and a hole punch. divide everything up into the tab it belongs under including your research.

this helps me keep up with the problems as my doctors present me with one after another.

What are your opinions on Teens & Medical Privacy?

This is a question for my science class, and I have to research the opions of people about "Minors and Medical Privacy".

So anyway, my question(s):

What medical procedures should minors have available to them without parental consent?

Do doctors have an obligation to inform parents of conditions a teen has (pregnancy, AIDS) even if the teen doesn't wish it?

What are your opinions on Teens %26amp; Medical Privacy?
I believe parents should be involved in all medical conditions involving their child. If I am responsible for my child till they are 18 then that includes medical care and any and all treatment.
Reply:I agree in theory with the previous poster, but reality is our politicians are asses and grant teens to have medical privacy. It's strange, because parents are responsible for payment if a teen ends up in a juvenile center but we as parents can't get access to confidential medical information. I don't think that any child under the age of 18 with living parents should be able to have medical procedures without parental consent. (Unless there is documented abuse or similar that can be proved). Has there ever been a malpractice suit against a doc for prescribing a medication without full knowledge of a kids family medical history and the kid had a deadly (hopefully not in the dead sense) reaction? With the paranoia in the medical community it boggles my mind that doctors support this. Bottom line, I don't think minors should have medical privacy because too many issues are at stake, including the caretaking of said minor if a medical procedure or treatment goes wrong and the parent is responsible for the outcome without any input into the decision making.
Reply:Clearly any life or death procedure should be carried out without a parent's consent. If a teen will die without immediate surgery and a parent cannot be reached to give consent, I believe the idea of implied consent would apply here.

Most other medical procedures should require parental notification as the parent is the legal guardian of the teen. I do believe that a doctor has a legal obligation to obtain parental consent before handing out any type of prescription (including birth control) or performing most medical procedures, those that are not life or death.
Reply:if you a minor you should have no medical or any other privacy than what your parents allow you to have...if your old enough to make decisions about medical privacy we should lower the age of being an adult ...
Reply:If your a minor, you are not entitled to privacy. The parents are in charge. The government is not the parent. Doctors are obligated to tell the parents everything, period!

What type of research has been done on paralysis recently?

I'm 20 living in Hawaii. In my opinion the medical field here, while it does consist of some very intelligent people, is far behind the rest of the country. So yes I have talked to doctors here and gotten an unsure response so please don't tell me to talk to a doctor.

I'm paralyzed from the waist down NOT from an accident but from birth. I here all kinds of research being done that can already fix a spine that's been broken in an accident. but what type of research or progress has been made for people with birth defects causing paralysis? Are there any potential cures, or procedures or experiments in existence that could change my situation? Which area or hospital is said research taking place? Anyone have contact info for the people heading said research?

What is the cost of Medical Insurance for an 18 year old?

I am a 17 year old senior in St. Louis, Mo. I plan to move out of my parents house promptly after the school year is over. My boyfriend and I have been doing a lot of research on apartments and creating a budget. My biggest concern though, is medical insurance.. I'm not sure how much it is going to cost us to be able to have it..

I would really appreciate an average monthly fee, (or at least an idea)

Thank you!

What is the cost of Medical Insurance for an 18 year old?
You can go on to bcbsmi.com

and you can complete a questioneere to give you a "rough" quote.

At your age, unless you have a lot of illness or plan to have a baby right away - you should consider a "HSA" (health savings account).

It will have a higher deductible but the benefits cover - q-tips, cotton balls, dental, vision and the account just keeps building up with interest.... it is really something to consider.

Other wise, "john alden" and humana are just a couple more you could consider.
Reply:I would advise not shacking up and staying on your parent's insurance. Your medical insurance costs will be determined by the company you choose and your medical history. A full-time student can remain on their parent's insurance until age 25.

GHP was always a great company to work with when I worked at Citimortgage. They do medical insurance as well for individuals. Again, it really depends on your history and what you want covered, and how much you want covered. Right now our family of 3 costs $13,000/year at United Healthcare.
Reply:Medical insurance for younger people is pretty reasonable. You should be able to find a decent policy for around $80 to $150 per month if you comparison shop.

Although there are many free sites that provide health insurance quotes I found two that specialize in this type of insurance:

http://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-3014621-1...

http://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-2952034-1...

Both of these sites provide free quotes.
Reply:There is no "average" because if you were in Maryland it'd be around $100 including maternity. So, don't look for an average cost. Call a health insurance broker that does business where you are and get the correct information.

It's not expensive though....relatively speaking.
Reply:Gabriella M, Home insurance is actually very flexible. I'm not familiar with all the fine print of my homeowners policy, but my homeowners insurance agent is always a phone call away. Try contacting your agent or a agent in your town. http://www.easyhomeinsuranceguide.com They should be able to help you.
Reply:IF you're healthy, it's going to cost you about $200 a month, per person, for a good, low deductible plan. No maternity benefits. No vision or dental.

Cheapest way to get health insurance, is through your employer.
Reply:Contact a local UNITED AMERICAN insurance company in your area. Being that you are 17 and I'm sure in good health. We have a $50,000 policy that would cover doctor and hospital coverage and a low deductible of $500 feel free to email if you have any questions

If I want to do research in virology for the military, must I have any prior military experience?

I wish to conduct research in virology and biological warfare for the U.S. Military. I plan on going to a 4-year college and then medical school. Is it possible to then enlist as an officer and go right to research?

If I want to do research in virology for the military, must I have any prior military experience?
difficult if not impossible. not too much research is done by military personnel period. Most of it is done by Civilian contractors. if you accept a commission, you will be expected to work in the hospitals treating patients first.
Reply:once your out of med school

But i would like to tell that, During my senior project or research, I am doing about medical science, and Virology in Aids,

I always went to the medical center and get denoted blood for testing, and many time that I was used my blood to be a comparison test
Reply:Yes. It is possible to receive a direct commission after completion of Medical School. Or you can complete 12 weeks of OCS. Or you could go into ROTC and get some financial help with medical school. Or you could be a civilian researcher and get paid a lot more.

Have you researched the history from the early days. There are quite a few articles in what was thought to be the possible uses when it was first developed.

It might be interesting to compare what was first mooted to what actually happened.

One area you mat have missed is the use of lasers as memory storage.

How is the best way to prepare for entering medical school as a minority student?

I am a 4th yr. at a University of California. I have multiple memberships to various clubs. Take part in research groups, I have been published and gave presentations of my findings. I work in the medical field, as well as volunteer weekly at my local hospital. Among these marks, I lack one thing and that is grades! how do my chances look for as a medical school applicant?

How is the best way to prepare for entering medical school as a minority student?
I'm a minority student as well, difference is I'm Canadian, so hopefully I can be of some help... What i can suggest to you is looking into Med schools that have some form of diversity recruitment for applicants. Many of the schools where I'm from are trying to boost minority applicants, and they will save seats for minority students... I'm taking Education and they save a total of ten seats for minority students. Grades are a piece of the puzzle, but its not always the most important... experience is the key, and many places look at that prior to making any final decisions.. Another thing is cold calling the admissions office for advice, or scheduling an appointment with someone like an adviser... or if you have one available, someone who may be there to talk to students of your ethnic group... Here there Black Student advisers and Aboriginal Student advisers. Also, if you wanted to you could contact a minority physician and ask if they are knowledgeable of any programs... or any reputable organizations in your community that could help.

What should I be doing now to get in a medical school?

I know this question is redundant, but I really have to ask it. I just started college, freshman, and decided that after high school, I want to become a doctor. I am planning to major in biology, but as a freshman, what should I be doing now to increase my chances of getting in a medical school, particularly JABSOM. Should I volunteer in a medical-like setting, join a club that will increase my success, or participate in a research finding cure for AIDS or cancer? Please, tell me what to do. I am really stringent with myself right now. All I want to do is get a 4.0 in college. You know, when your dream is this big, you will be very desperate achieving it, even though you make yourself look and feel stupid to others just to catch your dream and maybe would not even have time to grief for failure, you must move on without looking back. So please, tell me what to do now, maybe one day you will be my patient.

What should I be doing now to get in a medical school?
Majoring in Biology is great. You may want to minor or double major in Chemistry. You could take some human relations courses (to make sure you can relate well with people). You also want to be strong in Math.

Does your college offer pre-med as a major? That would be the first major to choose. If not, do the above mentioned courses.

Get a job working in the medical field - plasma center, CNA, nursing home. Anything that will be medical related. You could also volunteer.

As far as working in the actual setting vs. research - that is something only you can answer. If you love research, then perhaps you don't exactly want to be in medicine. You could do research and go into public health administration instead of being a doctor. If you want to stay in the research aspect, you will spend hours upon hours in the lab, and you need to make sure that life is what you want.

In any event, you want as much experience as you can get. If you want to tie research in your studies, please check out the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. They have summer undergraduate research opportunities: you get PAID to do research and you can take classes for FREE! Just something to look in to for the future. It's quiet competitive, but with more classes (apply between your sophmore and junior year or junior and senior year) and by doing the summer programs, your chances of being accepted in the grad school will be better.
Reply:You are most welcome. I wish you the best as you pursue graduate studies. Oh, and btw, within your university or surrounding universities, check into the McNair Scholars Program -- there is no national site, but here is ours: www.uwsuper.edu/mcnair. Report Abuse

Currently studying BS medical technology, and interested in going into research..?

hi, i know that to be able to do research i need a PhD, the plan for me is that after i earn a bachelor's degree i move back to the States(back, because i was born there but i just studied here in the Philippines for some reasons) and i finish my studies there, in California. is this a good idea? or will it be easier for me if i got my PhD here in the Philippines?

Currently studying BS medical technology, and interested in going into research..?
No PhD is easy to get, but if you love what you are researching it is worth it. Decide what general area you want to research in and talk to your current professors about where would be the best place for you to pursue a graduate degree in that area. Then once you have decided on the universities you would like to study at talk to the specific professors you are interested in studying under. Make sure you have a good fit, and if it is a respected university, program or researcher, you should be fine no matter where it is.

What kind of things should I do to prepare for medical school?

I am currently an undergraduate student and recently finished my first year. What should I do within these four years to prepare me for medical school? I talked to my advisor and she said that grades and research ae the most important. But there has to be other things I should do, right? What kinds of things can I do this summer? Are there pre-med internships available? If so, how can I search for them? Thanks a lot in advance!

What kind of things should I do to prepare for medical school?
besides studying, relax and do something fun to get all the stress out before you go to medical school. Also, if you have any free time, work and work so you dont go into debt

First of all, enjoy college. Have as much fun as possible, because you will never be able to do what you can once you are out (or in med school). Second, as a doctor myself, my first 'job' in my field was a 1 or 2 month volunteer position at a hospital pharmacy...that got my foot in the door so that I could get a real job and gain real experience. Really, the best thing you could do is to get an undergraduate research position your junior year....you may end up with a publication, but at least you will get a good recommendation out of it (if you play your cards right). For med school, I think the following are the most important in getting in:

1) who you know (recommendations)

2) grades

3) lab/pharmacy experience

4) hardships (poor, minority, or woman = easier to get in)
Reply:Do volunteer work in a medical setting and join school clubs. Any involvement is good.

What extracurriculars are important for admission to medical school?

I know one has to volunteer at a hospital and do outside research, but what distinguishes one applicant from another in terms of admission? What are some noteworthy extracurriculars? Joining on-campus organizations or student council? Is volunteer work in general non-medical related also acceptable? Can someone who got accepted to medical school please list their application statistics and any outside involvement?

What extracurriculars are important for admission to medical school?
By a huge margin, your GPA and MCAT score are much more important than extracurriculars. After those things, experience in the medical field is preferrable such as shadowing a physician or volunteering in a hospital. The idea is that they want to know that you are aware of what a doctor actually does, and not just have some romantic ideal of being a physician.

After that, doing something heart touching volunteer experience is always good. Tutoring blind kids, helping the poor, etc are all good.

Finally, try to work in a medical related capacity, CNA, EMT, Pharmacy Tech, insurance intake, etc during the summer or on weekends.
Reply:There isn't a script to follow. I had a classmate who was a history major who did civil war re-enactments. Another had been law enforcement and was on a competitive shooting team. Essentially, the admission committee wants you to give them a picture of who you are...what floats your boat. They don't want to accept the dweeb who sits in his room all night pulling legs off flies. They want to see that you have a full life, you are active in your life and that you have other interests that will help keep you 'normal'.
Reply:Be a Volunteer at a Hospital. Participate in Health Events (Walk for AIDS, etc.) anything that shows that you care as in Healthcare the Secret of Success is in the CARING more than the care!!

Your going into a field that is very competitive in some schools the interview process can turn you down for school many times before you get there. I just helped a friend get into med school and here are some of the things he did to get in.

Volunteer! preferably with a first aid group senior centre etc.

Teach especially first aid Join St John Ambulance brigades for both of these opportunities. This will give you hands on training medical first responder ticket and they are always looking for people to help.

When you start getting close to putting in your application for acceptance to a school start doing Video interviews. Have somebody play the part or several people play the part of a panel of interviewers asking you questions about ethics, racism, conflict management, stress management etc.

You do not need to have perfect answers these questions are to find out how you will cope as DR if accepted.

Good luck I hope that helps

Is it safe to volunteer for clinical research?

My son is currently admitted to Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Boston being treated for manic episode. He suffers from biporal disorder (BPD). He is supposed to attend his MBA classes at JWU, Rhodes Island from Sept 5 and was living in Boston with some friends. I am in Nepal strggling to support my family and can not afford to support this son in his studies and medical bills. He does not have a medical insurance also. Uncer such circumstances, he being a typical case of a BPD patient can offer himself as volunteer for research in the field of BPD, and get his medical bills waived, because as I learned from their web site MGH is ranked no.1 in US in the field of psychiatry. I need some expert advice on how safe is it to offer yourself as ginea pig for clinical research?

Is it safe to volunteer for clinical research?
Usually it's OK, but it can be dangerous. I'd be careful with it.

I think Massachusetts has a pretty good health insurance system, for people without money. The hospital should have a social worker who would know about that, and could help him sign up for it . If he's not a citizen, I'm not sure if he can get it, but it might still be worth looking into.

I'd check into other low-cost ways of getting care, too, before going the research route. Can he get it through his school? Or through a clinic? Sometimes doctors get free samples they can give out, or drug companies have programs where they give poor people free drugs.

Good luck- it's hard having to deal with something from so far away, and without money. Can you e-mail his hospital and ask to talk with a social worker? Or one of your son's doctors, caseworkers or therapists?
Reply:If volunteering for clinical and drug research wasn't safe, the FDA wouldn't allow it.

One thing to consider is whether or not your son has any medical coverage through his college.

Good Luck.
Reply:Unless they're actively SEEKING participants for a particular study, you can't just go "offering" yourself to people for a thing like that.
Reply:If thr research is though a hospital then it sould be safe they might not treat him though when they do a reseach study some peploe are a control group and get not treatment or get fake treatment they will explan this to you but in most cases they cant tell you if you where chosen to get treamnet or not as it would thourgh of the study they need to inform you of every thing they can before you agree to participate but like I said they can not tell you if you where getting real tretment untill after the study becuse if would really thorgh it off altough some studys everyone getts treatment but one group gets standard treatment and one group gets new treatment legaly they have to give you as much infrmation and anser as many quetions as they can as long as if does not through off there results and after the study they will fill you in compleatly
Reply:As others have said, a study would need to be in place. Clinical research is done to determine whether or not a particular treatment is safe. Research involving drugs and other chemical treatments has a high risk, otherwise the drug would go straight to market.

What are great and promising research topics I can use for a huge assignment. Any suggestions?

I have to pick a really good research topic. The topic could be social, societal, cultural, economic, political, environmental, medical, etc. I have to have a "argumentative thesis statement" and then have it have the potential to take it apart, see the problems in the topic and then talk about possible solutions. It will be a 7 page paper so the topic is what will make or break it. Any suggestions on some topics with lots of information that may be useful? I have to be able to gather 10 various reliable sources.

What are great and promising research topics I can use for a huge assignment. Any suggestions?
I think your best bet would be to go with something that's been in the news a lot lately, because you'll be able to find lots of recent information and many sources on it; plus, it will be interesting and timely. An example might be, global warming. Everyone's talking about it lately (including the presidential candidates). There's a documentary coming up on the National Geographic channel. There are lots of articles online and in journals.

Another interesting idea would be, so-called "illegal immigration." Like, should we or should we not allow illegal immigrants from Mexico to work here, obtain driver's licenses, vote, etc. There are lots of articles on that.

Another idea might be, universal healthcare. Would it be good or bad for us as a nation to have universal healthcare. Would the quality of our healthcare decrease. Would the expense of providing healthcare for every person drive us into a recession. There would be LOTS of information on that in many sources.

Another topic might be, immunizations. Your thesis could be, "An increase in mandatory immunizations is a good (or bad) thing." There's lots of discussion recently about whether the immunization shots themselves can cause problems like autism. Also, is it reasonable for all young girls to be immunized for cervical cancer, or is it just another way for pharmaceutical companies to make money.

These are all topics that are very timely and you would have no problem at all finding multiple sources on them. Good luck with your paper!
Reply:My suggestion is to pick something you are very passionate about. If it were me, I would write about abortion or gay marriages or the death penalty. Those have a tremendous amount of information and I have done plenty of research papers on them, so I would know. You have to have an interest in the topic or else you won't care about it. Think about an issue or law that you feel strongly towards - either for it or against it. Good luck!
Reply:In the field of medical research, it is now possible to grow some new body parts. For example, bladders can be grown in the laboratory using the patient's own stem cells, and the resulting organ transplanted into the patient - no rejection problems because it is the patient's own cellular matter. And a finger has been regrown. A man who lost the tip of his finger from the end knuckle up, has regrown the finger tip, complete with a nail! There are some remarkable advances in this field that may completely revolutionize medical practices.

What are some of the best medical schools?

I want an idea of what medical schools are really prestigious. I'm just starting to research colleges to go to, but all the medical schools that are top ranked have tuition costs over or nearing 30,000 which is outrageous to me. I'm going to have to do even more schooling after going to a 4yr college and I will so be in debt if I go to a private one!...even though I really want to. A little help please! Its much appreciated.

What are some of the best medical schools?
University of Washington and also Oregon have very good medical schools. If you went to their UG programs, you would have in-state tuition after a few years. Most good medical schools are $40,000+ now, and even public ones are about $15,000 a year before other costs. This is an 11-month program (no summers off). There are ways to reduce the cost by working in rural and low-income areas after residency (many states are now doing this).
Reply:Buy a copy of the US News and World Report Best Graduate Schools (It's called something like that). They decide who's who among top universities in any field.

Where can I find a message board for cancer research professionals?

My husband is a scientist and was actively involved in cancer research for many years at a hospital and a medical school. He would like to find message boards or other forums that are used by his peers so that he can engage in discussions of what is going on now in his field.. Is there anyone who can please give me the links to these message boards? Thank you!

How can I research plastic surgery in India? Are there any good sites on the Internet?

I am losing a lot of weight (over 100 pounds) and will need to have surgery to remove excess skin from several areas of my body. Although I exercise regularly, I can't rid myself of all of the damage I have done to my body. I have heard of the medical vacations in India and would like to do some research. Any suggestions would be welcomed.

How can I research plastic surgery in India? Are there any good sites on the Internet?
Cosmetic Surgery is very cheap in India. There is one company that is very famous in India that arranges cosmetic surgery for foreigners in India. They are called the Forerunners Healthcare.I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and about their patient stories.

I have also read that they arrange financing for american and canadian patients as cosmetic surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. The cost savings are incredible.

As a doctor i personally believe that your cosmetic surgery can be easily handled in India as the quality of healthcare available here is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.If you still havent got your surgery done, you are better off getting it done in India.

my cousin got her breast reduction/liposculpture/buttock lift surgery in India through the forerunners healthcare.she is more than very happy with the results.she just paid 30% of the amount she was quoted in USA and is all praise fore this forerunners healthcare company.i personally have seen the wondeful results and am particularly impressed with the kind of quality care she got from this company.I am sure they will help you also with the best.be

Is There Any Medical Knowledge Of What Exactly Causes Stigmata?

I have read some medical journals and some do explain that doctors have treated some patients for unexplainable bleeding from the hands, feet, and the head.

Nowadays with modern research is there anything that would explain from a medical point of view what causes some people to frequently bleed from their hands and feet.

Is There Any Medical Knowledge Of What Exactly Causes Stigmata?
Stigma, by definition, is a mark of disgrace or shame. Stigma has four components:

Labeling someone with a condition

Stereotyping people who have that condition

Creating a division — a superior "us" group and a devalued "them" group, resulting in loss of status in the community

Discriminating against someone on the basis of their label

Labels can be useful, though, and they're not always negative. In health, for instance, a diagnosis is, in essence, a label. A label can offer reassurance that your condition has a medical cause, and it can help steer you toward appropriate treatment.

Labels don't always result in stigma, either. Many illnesses today are gaining acceptance and empathy. Breast cancer is a shining example. Survivors used to feel shamed and kept their condition secret for fear of being stigmatized. Today, though, survivors and advocates openly talk about the condition, hold fundraisers or wear ribbons or wristbands to show support.

Why mental health disorders still face stigma

While most people would never think of mocking someone with breast cancer, mental health disorders and conditions still remain fair game for ridicule.

Mental vs. physical

Why does stigma of mental illnesses continue? For one thing, the term "mental illness" suggests that it's not the same as a medical or physical illness. To some, the word "mental" suggests that the illness is not a legitimate medical condition but rather a problem caused by your own choices and actions. People may blame you and think your condition is "all in your head." They may think that a mental health disorder means that you're weak or lazy. They may think that you should just "get over it." And you may begin to think these things about yourself, too.

In reality, mental illnesses have very complex causes, often a mix of your genetics, your biology and your life experiences — most of which are beyond your control. Neuroimaging studies, for instance, show physical changes in the brain associated with mental disorders. And studies show that some mental illnesses run in families, suggesting that they may be due in part to your genes.

Crime and violence

Some people also believe that if you have a mental health disorder, you must be dangerous and violent. This perception is often inflamed by media accounts of crime in which someone is vaguely referred to as "mentally ill."

Statistics, however, don't bear out a connection between mental illnesses and violence. Most people who have a mental illness are neither violent nor criminals.

Stigma worse for some conditions

As a result of such misperceptions, stigma continues, and mental health conditions remain the butt of jokes in popular culture. Negative portrayals of people with mental illnesses fuel fear and mistrust and reinforce distorted perceptions. That leads to even more stigma, causing a vicious cycle.

Some mental health disorders face more stigma than others, though.

Schizophrenia, for instance, is more highly stigmatized than depression is. It's routinely mocked and is less likely to generate compassion. Depression, on the other hand, is less often ridiculed, perhaps because an onslaught of advertising for antidepressant medications has made the disorder more mainstream and more acceptable.

Harmful effects of stigma

For someone with a mental illness, the consequences of stigma can be devastating — in some cases, worse than the illness itself. Some of the harmful effects of stigma include:

Trying to pretend nothing is wrong

Refusal to seek treatment

Rejection by family and friends

Work problems or discrimination

Difficulty finding housing

Being subjected to physical violence or harassment

Inadequate health insurance coverage of mental illnesses

Open discussion can help erase stigma

Not all the news is bad, though. Today, the stigma surrounding some mental health disorders is slowly eroding. That's due in part to greater public understanding of mental illnesses and the biological basis that many of them have. As causes of mental illnesses and better treatments for them are discovered, stigma may fade even more.

In addition, many celebrities and public figures have openly discussed their experiences with a mental health condition. This also helps bring the topic out of the closet of shame.

Coping with stigma

So what can you do about stigma? If you have a mental illness, you can decide who to tell, if anyone, and how much to tell. You may not be comfortable telling anyone anything at all about your condition. On the other hand, if you confide in people you trust, you may find much-needed compassion, support and acceptance.

Perhaps you want to actively combat stigma. You may only be comfortable pushing for more awareness within a close circle of family and friends by gently reminding them about the harm in jokes and stereotypes. Or if you're more comfortable tackling bigger challenges and facing bigger risks, you may decide to make your cause more public.

In either case, here are some ways you can cope with and help end stigma:

Get appropriate treatment. Don't let the fear or anticipation of being stigmatized prevent you from seeking treatment for your illness. For some people, a specific diagnosis provides relief because it lifts the burden of keeping silent and also underscores that you aren't alone — that many others share your same illness and issues.

Surround yourself with supportive people. Because stigma can lead to social isolation, it's important to stay in touch with family and friends who are understanding. Isolation can make you feel even worse.

Make your expectations known. People may not know how to support you, even if they want to help. Offer specific suggestions and remind people of appropriate language.

Don't equate yourself with your illness. You are not an illness. So instead of saying "I'm bipolar," say "I have bipolar disorder." Instead of calling yourself "a schizophrenic," call yourself "a person with schizophrenia." Don't say you "are depressed." Say you "have depression."

Share your own experiences. Speaking at events can help instill courage in others facing similar challenges and also educate the public about mental illness. Until you gain confidence, you may want to start at small events, such as talks at a support group or church community.

Monitor the media. If you spot stigmatizing stories, comic strips, movies, television shows or even greeting cards, write letters of protest that identify the problem and offer solutions.

Join an advocacy group. Some local and national groups have programs to watch for and correct archaic stereotypes, misinformation and disrespectful portrayals of people with mental illnesses.

Don't let stigma create self-doubt and shame

In the face of insensitive comments or crude advertising gimmicks, it may be difficult to feel good about yourself. Remember that you have a medical condition, that it's not your fault and that effective treatments are available. Try not to feel shamed, embarrassed or humiliated if someone knowingly or unknowingly makes light of or pokes fun at your illness. Therapy may help you gain self-esteem and put less stock into what others think of you.

And if you're comfortable enough to speak up, you may be able to help educate people about the hurt that can result from stigmatizing mental illnesses. The tide is slowly turning.
Reply:belgianlady didn't answer your question - apparently mis-read stigmata as stigma. Different condition. Great answer for stigma, but not what you asked. Maybe you should re-ask the question. Or try googling "stigmata - research" Report Abuse

What else should I invovle myself with to get into a good medical school?

Academically I have an outstanding record and I am a volunteer at a local hospital/officer of several clubs/organic chemistry tutor. But I feel like i still need to do more to impress the medical school administration. What else would you guys suggest??? Research involvement? Sports? Any advice would be great.

What else should I invovle myself with to get into a good medical school?
I agree with the advice to do volunteer work at a hospital that is connected with a medical school. Letters of Recommendation from physicians who are known to the med school are invaluable. It's a fact of life that it's who you know more than what you know.
Reply:nearly everybody has an outstanding academic record and volunteers in a hospital. that is basic pre-med preparation. research is good but they also like people who are LEADERS and give to their community. they expect doctors to be leaders and to be willing to help out the less fortunate. they also like people who are different or have overcome adversity. 3.8 or 3.9 gpa's from a 20 or 21 year old who went to college straight out of HS with 10's or 11's on the mcat's are a dime a dozen, that will not make you stand out. if you had a previous career or if you travel around the world mountain climbing or surfing the great breaks you will stand out. writer, musician, artist, think of something that will set you apart from the pack. if you are of a minority you can play that up also.
Reply:You might want to speak to your Guidance Councilor
Reply:Someone I know worked in the ER of a teaching hospital every summer during college. He did whatever needed to be done. He was accepted to the medical school connected to that college, and then to the hospital for residency. So I would try to get any job at a hospital, particularly a teaching hospital. It would also be a good opportunity to be able to explore what specialty you may be interested in, and to get advice and recommendations. When you take a position--paid or not--be sure to think strategically and do what will be best for your future. Good luck!

How much does a diagnostic medical sonographer make?

Recently when I was doing research, I spotted information about the things a diagnostic medical sonographer does. It sounds real interesting. Would someone be able to tell me how much one would make in this profession or kindly refer me to a website that would have the starting salary, median salary, and the salary one makes after working 2 or more years in this profession? Also, which website has the schools nationwide for this type of training? Thank you.

How much does a diagnostic medical sonographer make?
When thinking about entering an ultrasound program, you need not be concerned so much about certificate vs. degree. What is important is that you go to an ACCREDITED program, whether it is college or hospital based. An accredited program allows you to take your registry (licensing) exams upon graduation. Once you get licensed, you will never be asked about your schooling again. An employer does not care what route you take to get licensed, they just want you to have that license.

Don't waste your time or money on a NON-accredited program. Upon completion and graduation from a NON-accredited program, you must work in the field of sonography for a full year prior to taking your licensing examinations. But, you will have a hard time finding an employer to hire you, unless you are licensed.

I would suggest you observe an imaging department to get an idea of what ultrasonographers do daily. There is much more to it than scanning pregnant women. Most people have no idea how much is involved in this career!

You can find a list of accredited schools in your area, by searching "diagnostic medical sonography" and your state at the following site. There are links provided for each program, which will give you additional information (including course duration and prerequisite courses):

http://www.caahep.org/Find_An_Accredited...

Many people, myself included, go to school to become a radiologic technologist, before continuing to ultrasound school. In fact, it can be difficult to get into u/s school without the RT license. There are many more choices for schools for x-ray in most states. You can find them here, by searching “radiography“ and your state:

http://www.jrcert.org/cert/Search.jsp

The pay for ultrasound technologists will vary, depending on experience and geographical location. The American Society of Radiologic Technologists just did a large salary survey, in 2007. You can see how much a RT and/or ultrasound technologist averaged, per year, in your state here:

Why does George Bush think it is better to discard unwanted embryos instead of using them for research?

George Bush has not vetoed a single piece of legislation, but today he is going to take a stand on this? Stopping the federal government from funding research that could cure Alzheimer's and many other diseases. So other countries can do this research and get ahead of us on medical technology. And for what? So that people should throw away unneeded embryos instead of using them for research? Is anyone appalled by this?

Why does George Bush think it is better to discard unwanted embryos instead of using them for research?
once again, this administration is using fear to justify their doings. People are 'afraid' that abortions will be used, they are 'afraid' of the fact that animals and humans are already, and have always been used for testing. They are 'afraid' that the frozen embryo might be the next Einstein, or some other genius we have yet to see from the live births that have taken place since Einstein. They are 'afraid' that their taxes will go up. They are 'afraid' god might see it as condoning abortion. Most are happy to stick their heads in the sand and believe everything the administration tells them without question, for 'fear' the terrorists might get them and their families. It is shameless. I'd personally like to know how many embryos the Bush family destroyed after they were done with their fertility treatments to have the twins. And since the majority of those pregnancies end up being triplets or more, I'd like to know how many fetuses the Bush's destroyed in Laura's womb, to get that number down to two. Anybody who stands on religion for this one needs to understand, those embryos were man made, not ';miracles from god'. End of Rant
Reply:Because it helps the conservatives who were falling away from being on his side to be sure to support him. It is obvious due to his poll ratings that people in both political parties do not approve of Bush. Vetoing stem cell research and gay marriage are both just distractions.
Reply:This is a very difficult question to answer. Personally, I could argue both sides. I don't think it is a question with an easy answer.

Like it or not, upon fertilization, the resulting cells are genetically unique. Does this constitute life? Personally, I think so. Do the cells have feelings? I don't think so. So why throw them away?

Two reasons that I can think of:

1. If being genetically unique constitutes life, it wouldn't be a good idea to set a precedent with using embryos for medical research. This gives researchers the green light to destroy life to further medical research. What if they decided to start to do medical research on living people with mental defects. Afterall, it would be for the greater good and many are unable to sustain life by themselves. The concept of performing medical research on a mentally defective person would be rejected by every sane American (at least I hope), yet both are lives that are incapable of living on their own (before people get mad, I acknowledge that a large majority of "mentally ill" can live on thier own, but some can not). Throwing away a life for medical research is a very dangerous precident to set.

2. Embryonic stem cells have a 0% success rate. Not a single illness has been cured with embryonic stem cells. n fact, embryonic stem cells have been known to cause unrelated illnesses such as tumors.

Why would we use embryos?

1. They are going to be discarded anyway. If a life is going to be wasted (or a group of cells, however you view it), wouldn't it be best to use the life to further the lives of others? IMHO, a great example of this in society is organ donation. A person acknowledges they are going to die (granted usually unexpectedly) so they say take what they need. Use my body to do good for others.

2. Embryonic stem cell research has a 0% success rate (yes, the same arguement as before). No pun intented, but stem cell research is still in its infancy. There is much to be learned. So despite a lack of success now, it does not mean there won't be success in the future. Stem cells should be harvested for the good of medicine.

Just my 2 cents
Reply:i think that instead of using live embryos for research they should use dead ones
Reply:If you have to kill someone to help someone, is that really a good idea? This appalls me. Adult stem cells can do the same thing. If the embyos are unwanted, why are there so many of them? Someone must want them. Abortion is big business, dear. Stem cell research is just another market outlet for the abortionists.
Reply:I am appalled by this because we could cure diseases and we are just getting rid of embryos that we could use to help research. That shows what a dumbass the president is.
Reply:Until we get someone in that office that isn’t lead around by their nose (or aother more tender body part) then we will continue to have stupid decisions made to appease religious groups rather then logical and some times hard decisions made for the betterment of the human race.

This by no means - means that I support creating new embryos only for research. But sometimes we have to do things we don't agree with or even like.
Reply:I'm appalled that he has a moral problem with this, yet has no problem justifying the loss of innocent life in Iraq as "consequences of war".

Hypocrisy at its worst has been on display with this president since he promised to restore "honor and dignity" to the White House.
Reply:Yes he does. He also seems to think that stem cell research will encourage women to have more abortions and begin a black market for fetuses (and no, it won't). Bush is an idiot. He doesn't realize that he is sentencing a few million people to death by NOT doing the research. I am one of them.
Reply:Oh come on now! Surely you know by now that the guy is brain dead. True, other countries will get way ahead of us, and the US will wind up paying through the nose for the technology. I'm appalled by just about everything Bush does. He's a definite himbo ( the male equivalent to the female bimbo).
Reply:yes. and i do, too.

i'm appalled at the thought that you would use a human being for medical testing that will kill it.
Reply:Its just the ethics of it. would you offer up a baby chicken for animal testings? If you did there would be a massive attempt to stop it. Same principal. its just wrong
Reply:Because stem cells can be acquired through other methods. Some of us actually believe an embryo is a human life. And looking at what disgusting things could come from allowing the use of them is enough to make any reasonable person pick up a pen and veto the whole thing.
Reply:because he's an idiot and we should all revolt
Reply:Perhaps Mr.Bush is standing on the pro-life side to avoid any major controversy. I really don't understand his logic. I believe when he steps down, the next president will have to step up to the plate for stem cell research on the discarded embryos. Please vote Have a great day.
Reply:Because he needs to pander to the extreme fundamentalist religious base of wackos, who are the only ones still supporting him. As a result of this foolish policy, the US will soon be light years behind every other nation in this important area of research.

Back to the Dark Ages of digging up corpses and such.

And to reiterate, these are existing embryos which will soon be destroyed. They are not human fuc***g beings.
Reply:Adult stem cells are NOT as effective. If it was I'd like to think that all these scientists would have used them so they wouldn't hear every "christian" bitching and moaning. Secondly, there's absolutely NOTHING human about these CELLS. They can't talk, feel pain [because they have no CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM] or see. They are CELLS. And the sooner these so called Christians wake up and realize that the sooner we can get on with research that could cure some of the worst diseases man has ever faced.
Reply:I do not get it either. Why throw these embryos away as they could be used for great help for others who are suffering. It is not like we are buying these embryos people are going to continue to abort oh this is frustrating
Reply:I'm pretty sure anyone who isn't extremely religious is appalled by that. I'm not sure that embryos would be discarded though, I think the point of the legislation is to make sure that these embryos aren't taken in the first place. The debate is over when life begins, and Bush seems to believe that it begins at conception and discarding the embryos would be murder just as much as research that destroys the embryo would be.
Reply:Why don't you know what you're talking about? Do some research on exactly what the proposed bills say. Don't listen to tv or people in here.

First of all, Bush is the first president to ever fund stem cell research. Second, he opposes funding to create new embryos for stem cell research. There is nothing in the bill about stopping the funding on existing embryos.

Lean the facts before going on a rant.
Reply:Because he supports anything that destroys life (wars, nuclear weapon development) and shoots down everything that protects and promotes life. Such as stem cell research, environmental protection measures, assistance with health insurance for citizens who can't afford it). He wants us to all go backward in human evolution so we can all resemble him a bit more.
Reply:because he doesn't want to upset the religious groups

Yes, I am appalled and I can't wait for a more sane President.
Reply:How about quit your b*tching and find another source to research. Why not adult stem cells? Why does it have to be an "embryos" stem cell?
Reply:Adult stem cells are just as effective for research purposes, and they do not involve the destruction of a life (embryo). I agree with

the President's position this time.

What kind of college do you have to go to to get into Medical School and how long do you have to go?

I want to go to medical school in the future and I've done research and plenty of websites say that you have to go to another college before going to Medical School. I thought you could apply straight out of high school but I'm glad that you have to go to another college before then because I'm a hard worker and this will motivate me better than just coming out of high school when people don't really know what they want to do in life.I live in SC also so please list possible colleges before Medical School that are close to SC.

What kind of college do you have to go to to get into Medical School and how long do you have to go?
Most medical schools require at least a bachelor's degree before acceptance into medical school (and those that do not rarely accept anyone without at least a bachelor's). However, there are a few programs that offer 6-7 year programs that are combined BS/MD programs right out of high school. They allow you to go through a specific program as an undergrad and take your pre-med requirements. You can apply for medical school after your 2nd/3rd year of undergrad and enter without officially graduating so it only takes 6-7 years to get through. You still have to take the MCAT and entrance into the program does not automatically enter you in the class of medicine (but if you recieve certain MCAT scores and have a certain GPA you will get in). There are not a lot of these programs and I don't know of any specifically in SC, but Baylor and Washington University offer such programs. Good luck!
Reply:Medical school is like grad school or law school, you have to have an undergraduate degree first. People usually major in something in the life sciences like biology or chemistry. Check out collegeboard.com. You can enter all the things you want in a school, like location and size of classes and it will give you some schools might like. Good luck!
Reply:You can go to any 4 year university and major in anything before medical school. The only real requirements are that you have to take certain courses in chemistry, biology, physics, and such. You need to check with some medical schools you would like to go to for specifics.

So basically, do what you like to do during your undergraduate years, worry about medical school later.
Reply:You need a four year bachelor's degree first. You major in "Pre Med", which means a lot of courses in biology and chemistry, and a few in math and physics.

Any good state school such as USC, UNC, NC State would be fine.

How dangerous are human medical trials?

I am in financial difficulty, and am considering doing human medical trials at the Guys hospital drug research unit. How dangerous is this?

How dangerous are human medical trials?
clearly it depends firstly on the nature of the trial. A trial looking into the effects of acupuncture on treating athlete's foot is far less risky than a trial on a new treatment within oncology!

When a drug is trialed, it is generally the first time that it has been tested on humans. Generally the drug is safe, (more to the point, the doctors know how the drug will react on most occasions), however, as in the case of

Park, there are rare occasions when the drug behaves in way not previously known.

Incidentally, Viagra was first trialled on men who were at risk of heart attacks, but the doctor running the trial said that all the men found that they were having erections after taking the medication
Reply:i was gonna do one once but didnt go thru with it coz in the lond run dont know what effect they will have on u in future!

look what happened to them ppl in the news the other month!!

up to u tho

health or money????
Reply:Not dangerous at all! I did it numerous times and never had anything adverse happen to me at all. In fact you can acquire some interesting side effects! I now hear in color, and can speak to most single cell organisms, not to mention that when it rains I can vibrate hard enough to pass through a wall if I want to. Oh! And I made $27 bucks!
Reply:Maybe you should google them and anything over their company will come up..just go to google.com. Good luck!
Reply:Since that medical trial went horrendously wrong and the men were dubed 'elephant man' I would say you were pretty safe...they will not dare take risks like that again plus that was a diff company. I would trust Guys hospital...go for it x
Reply:Most of the time not much but after therecent scare I'm not so sure, a while ago I considered doing them too, but as I get mild asthema and am on medication they wouldn't take me.
Reply:Always a pleasure to receive feedback about my insights on yahoo answers, especially from recidivist speculitive pornographers. I have many great domains available:

www.yourmotherlovesyoutoo.co.uk (valued at 1p)

www.ihatemyselfandiwanttodie.org (valued at £2000)

www.cantmakeanhonestliving.co.uk (no value)

and many more...
Reply:You get more money for the more risky trials which i wouldn't recommend as you can be permantly damaged with them, the minor ones like acne cream testing or deoderant sensitivity testing are safer but as i said you won't get as much. I do think the recent scare was just unlucky and there are thousands of people out there that do the trials and live happy, healthy lives, its really up to yourself if you want to take the risk.
Reply:Extremely dangerous. As these drugs will never have been tested on humanss before, making you the proverbial guinea pig.

Why are most religious people oppose to stem cell research?

I am just curious as to your reason behind oppsing it. Or why the main religious denomination are opposed to it? What are their reasons?

Shouldn't we make an attempt to benefit from medical science and medical research, rather than hinder it?

Why are most religious people oppose to stem cell research?
There not against stem cell research.

There against farming fetus' for stem cells to do it.
Reply:because they are idiots, taking a very few words of questionable scripture completely out of context to suit and justify their own twisted and fundamentalist sense of morality.
Reply:I'm not opposed to stem cell research as long as they don't kill any living being, such as an unborn child, to take the cell. What I don't understand is why don't they start taking stem cells from adults to do the research. Everyone has them throughout their lives. It's easier to find them in unborn children because they have more cells. But if they can find oil 30,000 ft below the ocean floor, they should be able to find a stem cell in a 300lb person.
Reply:Stem cell research does not farm fetus', stem cells would be harvested from already aboted fetus' of women who were going to do it anyway better than rotting in a dumpster i say, something tht will benefit all man kind, becuase it relates mostly to abortion i would say probably catholics disapprove more, and other neo-christian fanatics
Reply:i don't see that big deal behind it, the benefits from it out weight the negatives, it can help so many people and better some many lives, what does it matter to you, plus if it was you who that happened to, and if a little research was a matter of life or death how would you feel, and on top of it stem cell research can help find cures to disease that pretty much make you feel like a prisoner in your own body, what right do we have to tell people too bad i don't feel like letting you live, can you honestly live with you, and if you can shame on you
Reply:Its not just religion that opposed, but also includes the Pro-life movment.

Most of the people you will find opposing it are people who believe life begins at conception, so to do research on it, or take a "fetus"/"baby"/zygot apart is against the idea ALL life is sacred, especially the one that can not speak for itself.

Not me, but the point of view they have.
Reply:I was until I found out they can take it from the birth of a child ability cord, and it didn't come abortions like I had thought. They can also take a woman menstrual blood for stem cells, so I don't see that any different then giving blood.

I don't think abortions and death and killing of baby's are right for it though, that murder

What's the difference between having an associates in medical coding and billing and just having a certificate

Is it even necessary to have an associates degree for medical coding and billing? I have been doing some research on this career, I just want to make sure I am making the right choice. I don't want to waste my time earning an associates degree for this career if it's not needed. Any advice from any people in that field?

What's the difference between having an associates in medical coding and billing and just having a certificate
An associate degree is from a two year technical or community college. A certificate is something you receive after a single or a series of course(s) focusing on a specific topic. Depending the on the organization employing the medical coders, one or the other will do.

I would suggest you contact a local hospital or insurance company and ask them what the qualifications are for there coder positions.

Good luck on your career path.

Where would I research to obtain answers about the definition, importance of medical proficiency testing?

no where at all.

None, no proven studies of any merit whatsoever.

Basically politics. Us doctors are far too important to be told if we are proficient or not... is the basic stand still.

All studies are biased, at best, and frank deception at worst.

Really a joke, our dept does a ton of this type of "research" and it is without merit.

What are some interesting medical/health careers or occupations?

I need to research on a career in the medical/health field for a project in my high school. I want to find some interesting specific jobs in general. If there are great websites to look at, could you give some? If you know any interesting medical/health jobs, could you tell me?

(Please don't give me answers like doctor or answers that are broad..please be specific. Thanks!)

What are some interesting medical/health careers or occupations?
Here's some different health careers with their training required, average salary, and links to their US Dept of Labor job description, duties, and job outlook:

1) Physician assistants need at least a 2 year degree, better if you have a 4 year degree before applying for the 2 year PA training program. They make about $69,410 a year. http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos081.htm

2) Physical therapists need at least a 4 year degree, and many now need 2 years of graduate school as well. They make about $60,000 a year. http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos080.htm

3) Radiation Therapists: A Radiology therapist needs a 4 year degree and makes $58,000 a year.

Reply:Check all nurses.com for different nurse specialty.
Reply:Athletic Training. It's a specific branch of Sports Medicine and it deals in taking care of athletes. They make sure that they are healthy and that injuries are not only prevent, but also taken care of. There's more to it than that but that is a summery. I'm in school going for my B.S. in athletic training and I really enjoy it. Try this site for more info: http://www.nata.org/consumer/index.htm
Reply:Pharmacy Technician. You have many choices as to where to work, sucha as retail, hospital, mail order. Some technical schools will hire you to teach a technician course. I have been in this field for 30 years now and totally enjoy it. I get to deal with the public, help them to feel better and learn a tremendous amount of information about medication, insurance and pharmacy laws.
Reply:Try Dietetics. People who study Dietetics can become dietitians once they finished a 4 year degree, a dietetic internship, and passed the national exame to become registered dietitian. There are many opportunities for dietitians. There are demands for dietitians in the hospitals, community hlth clinics, research, food service, etc. The opportunities are endless!
Reply:Chief medical examiner. This person represents the whole State and oversees all causes of suspicious death. It may be an elected position.
Reply:Speech-language pathologist (speech therapist), physician assistant (separate profession from 'medical assistant'), registered dietician (R.D.), vocational rehabilitation counselor (rehabilitation counselor), health information administrator.

Here is a website to find out general information about various careers: US Occupational Outlook Handbook www.bls.gov/oco and can type into search 'speech pathologist', 'physician assistant', 'registered dietician' or such.
