In medical sciences, why it is called stem cell research?

Stem cells are the cells you use in stem cell research. A stem cell is a primal cell that can be found in many organisms. They have the ability to multiply and become different kinds of cells. A stem cell is like a blank cell, and you can make it grow and turn into a particular cell.

In medical sciences, why it is called stem cell research?
Stem cell are what all cell start of as. All cells 'stem' from these cells.
