When someone asks you for a donation to support cancer research...?

Do you point out to them that the money they are collecting is being used to torture animals? Do you inform them that there are ethical and humane charities who are funding research into cancer and other medical conditions without harming animals? Or do you just donate without thinking?

When someone asks you for a donation to support cancer research...?
No, I never donate without thinking. I have a unique feeling for cancer research because my mother died of it after a 5 year struggle (it was horrible). But I love animals as well. If you can, would you email me and tell me the names or addresses etc of the ethical and humane charities? I would donate to them.

Best wishes, Barry.
Reply:Matt H is right, we can only try to prevent it or minimise the risk by not eating meat or animal products and making other lifestyle changes. Cancer is a lottery, a malevelant one and anyone can develop it !! I donate to McMillan Nurses and Hospices if they are collecting . These are the selfless organisations that make people's last days on this Earth comfortable !!! Can you let me know the names of the ethical charities that are researching cancer cures too my maternal aunt died of cancer and my paternal aunt is doing battle with it now !
Reply:No, I just give them a donation without asking questions. My mother died of cancer, my grandfather died of cancer, and several of my other relatives have had cancer but lived to tell about it. It's going to take a lot more research from all sectors before we can find a cure for the disease, and I would hate to think that the solution might have come from an organization that went under for lack of funding.

As much as I love animals, I've seen what cancer does to human beings that I love, too. I'm afraid I'm just not real picky about contributing to any charity involved in eradicating that hideous disease.
Reply:I don't donate to charities at all, they are a rip off. Cancer charity has been running for years and the disease could have been cured years ago but it's not in the researchers and others interest to do so. They are making a rich living out of it.
Reply:I dont inform them unless they ask me why. I understand that it is a touchy subject. But when someone really wants to know I explain that we dont have the right to use animals for our benefit. Also animal testing has shown almost no results, which many people dont realise. So it's not only cruel, but it is usually totally pointless.

What if some other species decided to use us in order to save themselves? How would we feel about that?

There are other, more compassionate ways to deal with cancer and other diseases.
Reply:I actually inform them that i don't give money to their charity because of the reason above. most times they give me a funny look and wander off to find another victim.

hehe
Reply:if we are not kept informed, how are we to know?

In most cases, charities do good, so yes, people donate because they feel they are doing the right thing, and are not to know if they are not.

Thats why humans are ,on the whole, compassionate beings.
Reply:i tell them no, i don't have any money to donate to charities that test on animals. there are other ways to test. not all companies use animals.
Reply:No, I just don't donate. I've never been asked why and have never given a reason. I'm 100% opposed to animal testing so if I know the charity supports it I will not donate to them.

Like it or not but prevention is still the best option we have.

We must keep this in prospective people, animal testing will not cure cancer. They have been testing on animals for close to 30 years now to find a cure for cancer and they are not a bit closer than they were 29 years ago in regards to animal testing. The "improvements" that have been made by western medicine have been made though human research.

If you think it is wrong to eat animals how can you think it's ok to test on them? It's wrong of humans to use animals in any way just as it is wrong for humans to use other humans no matter the benefit.
Reply:funny how many people see the "vegetarian and Vegan "section in the "food and drink" section as an ethics board, happens all the time.

I prefer to donate to charities with similar ethical beliefs to me. simple really. As such, i keep away from anything that supports testing on animals. Macmillan care - to pay for cancer nurses might be a better choose, but i'm sure there are problems with them then using drugs that were tested on animals at some stage.
Reply:I dont give to cancer research charitites. Both my mum and dad died of cancer and while I appreciate that certain treatments can save peoples lives, there are other ways of going about it rather than killing and torturing innocent creatures. Both my parents were vegetarians and animal rights supporters and they also felt that others shouldnt be made to suffer just because they were.

There are other ways to support cancer charities and give help to those who need it.

If people really need to test these drugs at all,it seems a little silly to test on something other than a human, as its humans that are going to be given the medication. why not on paedophiles? Let them do something worthwhile with their lives!!
Reply:It is sad that some people feel that somethimes 'the only research that can be done had to be done on animals'. Its just not true. Do the research - there are alternatives, however, labs want cheaper research and max profit. Its sad and wrong. Testing animals also produces confused results, it is not the best choice for research!
Reply:As someone who has had cancer and been cured I owe a debt to the animals used in the cancer research and I honor them. There is actually no way to RELIABLY test anti-tumor drugs except on living tumors. There is no way to reliably test new surgical procedures except on living tissue. They could be tested on humans or on mice. People buy mice in pet stores to feed to snakes. To have to defend the use of mice or other animals to save humans from such a terrible disease is absurd. Those who engage in such armchair sanctimoniousness are most likely young and arrogant and have never had cancer, but the odds are very high that they or someone they love deeply may one day benefit from this research.
Reply:I donate because i dont give a rats *** about them testing on a rat.
Reply:I used to point this out to them when I was younger and could be bothered to put up with the inevitable pro-animal testing rant I got as a reply. Now I just ignore them and refuse to donate to their charity.

If they push for a reason then I do give a the above reasons and they rant at me about 'do you think lab rats matter more than people' etc etc.

These people just don't want to hear that animal testing is pointless and the tests all have to be done on humans as well. One thing that usually makes them think is when I ask them how they'd like it if a more advanced and intelligent alien race came and decided to perform medical experiments on them.
Reply:much as i love animals i would donate. my mum died of cancer 27 years ago and i think if there had been more research back then, maybe she would still be with us.
Reply:My own tissue was donated to a cancer bank after I had a bilateral mastectomy. It will help future cancer patients like myself.I also do the Race For Life.

I hope for your sake you never get cancer.I know quite a bit about cancer research since being ill.
Reply:I donate monthly for cancer research and am also doing Race for Life in three weeks time. I have a dog who i love dearly but would not think twice if a test on him could possibly save the life of one of my family or friends, Yes it is sad that there seems to be no other way other than testing on live tissues etc, but if these test werent done then would human life fade out and the world left to the animals?
Reply:I'm for helping people first and sometimes the only research that can help is to be done on animals. I question people who puts animals above people.
Reply:get real. sounds like you have never lived with someone you has /had cancer. yes i donate.
